Gas Company Signs Are as Good as Gold
The cost of gasoline may be rising, but buyers weren’t worried about economizing at a Florida auction of gas station memorabilia. The 30-year collection of one hardcore petroliana enthusiast featured gas pumps, globes, air pumps, oil cans and die-cast trucks and airplanes, many advertising Texaco. The sale also included many signs. Some are pictured. Most signs ranged in price from $150 to $500.
Baby boomers reminisce about riding in the back seat of Dad’s ’57 Chevy in the days when a uniformed attendant cleaned your windshield, checked your oil, filled your tank for 30 cents a gallon, and handed you a free giveaway—a glass, a map or a miniature gasoline truck (now all collectibles).
Flashy signs were part of the landscape, and now they’re popular collectibles. Many are painted tin, but the most durable are made by fusing powdered glass onto sheet metal with high heat. Collectors call these signs “porcelain,” “enamel” or “porcelain enamel.” The finish didn’t pit or rust. Sizes vary from small pump-plate signs to large marquee signs.
One buyer paid $1,320 for a 6 1/2-foot porcelain Texaco sign on an 18-foot stand. A 23-inch porcelain enamel Texaco Motor Oil flange sign sold for $1,155. But some signs went for under $200. A Pennzoil “Sound Your Z” tin sign sold for $165 and a 1969 Quaker State Motor Oil tin sign went for $193.
